Types of Solar Inverters and Their Characteristics

According to their purpose, inverters are divided into three main types:

1. Off-Grid (Autonomous)

The best choice for locations without reliable grid connection or with frequent power outages. During the day, it converts energy from the panels and directly powers the home; at night or in cloudy weather — from batteries. If the batteries are discharged — it connects to the grid or a diesel generator. It operates independently of the external grid.

2. Grid-Tie (On-Grid / Network)

Used in grid-connected solar stations, often for commercial purposes or for selling electricity under the "green" tariff / net billing. It converts DC to AC and feeds excess into the grid. Batteries are not provided. The system works only when grid voltage is present — during a power outage, the inverter stops for safety reasons.

3. Hybrid

The most versatile and in-demand type today. It combines the advantages of off-grid and grid-tie inverters. It supports batteries, can operate in various modes: priority home consumption, battery charging, selling excess to the grid. It provides backup power during outages, features intelligent control and monitoring.
